On Wednesday, South Africa passed the milestone of administering more than one million Covid-19 vaccine doses. However, almost 500,000 of these were administered by the Sisonke study.

South Africa has administered 1,045,104 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine in four months.

However, only 479,768 people have been fully vaccinated after receiving the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine through the Sisonke study.

The remaining 565,336 are yet to receive their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

In KwaZulu-Natal, 181,948 people over 60 have been vaccinated at the province’s 108 vaccination sites, according to the province’s Department of Health on 2 June. There are still 41,553 healthcare workers to be vaccinated, it added.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Department of Health provided an update on its vaccination roll-out.

It has administered 6,026 doses of the Pfizer vaccine – 4,516 in Kimberley, 886 in Kuruman and 624 in Upington.

Vaccine wastage is below 2% – the Western Cape’s wastage is currently 5%.

As of 1 June, more than 27,000 Northern Cape residents had registered across 253 towns. This is up from the 3,000 people registered two weeks ago. The province does allow walk-ins and registration at the vaccination sites.

The province will receive 12,870 doses this week and is set to open another four sites next week.

In the Western Cape, 66,452 people had received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine by 2 June. The province aims to vaccinate 60,000 people by the end of the week.

In the Free State, 27,529 people have been vaccinated – 7,750 this week.
