There is little doubt that President Jacob Zuma is on the way out. It is a matter of time before the chapter closes on his presidency – either through an early, forced exit or through the slow death of his final term. In December, a new ANC leader will be elected, which will begin the transition to a post-Zuma South Africa. There are various organisations and initiatives working on the country’s recovery and rebuilding processes, including the National Foundations Dialogue Initiative and Save South Africa. But an essential part of the recovery will be the full exposure of the rot of the Zuma years.

Trump fires FBI director Comey

It’s shades of Nixon in the White House today, as President Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey. Made famous for scuppering Clinton’s election campaign, Trump had alluded to the “waste” of investigating his Russian ties earlier on Tuesday via Facebook. A few hours thereafter Comey was dismissed. The stench of a cover-up now cloys the air.

US mulls European-wide computer ban

Googling Donald Trump’s ongoing Nixon evolution could soon get a lot harder while flying. US authorities announced late on Tuesday that they are considering a Europe-wide expansion of the controversial computer ban. The Department of Homeland Security will confirm the new restrictions some time soon, probably before the busy summer travel season kicks off in Europe.

New South Korean president to engage the north

President Moon Jae-In has announced his willingness to engage with North Korea in meaningful dialogue. Moreover, a presidential trip to Pyongyang was a possibility in the “right circumstances”. If realised, the visit and subsequent negotiations would be historic, even if the results were doubtful.

Giant dinosaur bird discovered in China

Some 90 million years ago, a giant bird-like dinosaur roamed what is now Central China. Weighing 3,000kg and measuring 8m, the Beibeilong sinensis is only the second of its kind. The creature resembled a massive Cassowary and laid eggs the size of monster truck tires, researchers say.
