A ‘Blade Runner’ sequel? Say it ain’t so!

A ‘Blade Runner’ sequel? Say it ain’t so!

The Scott brothers are apparently in talks to give more old classic films makeovers. Ridley may be returning to dystopian future Los Angeles with either a prequel or sequel to the 1982 “Blade Runner”, and Tony is going to remake the 1969 classic “The Wild Bunch”. It could be worse – Tom Cruise keeps threatening to revisit “Top Gun”. Why can’t Hollywood leave our memories alone? By SIPHO HLONGWANE.

Alcon Entertainment said they were at the very preliminary stages of a “Blade Runner” remake, with director Ridley Scott attached to “any possible new ‘Blade Runner’ films”. The Alcon executive quoted by Variety magazine said they had not hired a writer yet, and were yet to devise a strategy. Hopefully it won’t be a sequel – the cliffhanger ending (as seen on the director’s cut) is one of the highlights of the 1982 classic. And hopefully, they will persuade David Peoples, who co-wrote the screenplay for “Blade Runner”, to pitch in once more.

Tony Scott is reportedly in talks with Warner Bros to direct a remake of the 1969 western “The Wild Bunch”. The Coen brothers’ direct remake of John Wayne’s only Oscar winner, “True Grit” (with Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon) was very favourably received both by critics and the box office. But before Tony goes Western, he wants to make a film based on the 2002 River Run Riot, in which members of the Hells Angels biker gang fought The Mongols, a rival gang. For this he’s chasing Jeff Bridges to star.

If the thought of “Blade Runner” being tampered with leaves you cold, think of all those happy 1980s memories that could go to crap if Tom Cruise has his way and we see a “Top Gun 2”. DM
