Madagascar coup leader overturns consensus talks

President Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar has unilaterally declared that the Indian Ocean island state will hold parliamentary elections in March. His statement comes after internationally brokered deals with opposition parties collapsed. Rajoelina overthrew former democratically elected president, Marc Ravalomanana, in a March coup, and since then has strung everyone along over a return to legitimate rule. The African Union suspended Madagascar after Rajoelina came to power. It won’t be pleased that he’s now dismissing forming a consensus government as previously agreed, especially after he boycotted recent talks in Mozambique on that subject.
