Edison guns for renewable energy, despite expense

US energy utility Edison International says it will spend billions of dollars to provide more renewable energy to customers in Southern California. It also wants to produce carbon-free, wind energy for homes and businesses across the US. Based in California, the company already gets about 16% of its power from renewables. Edison International has two subsidiaries, Southern California Edison and Edison Mission Group. The first company is one of the largest energy utilities in the US, and it hopes to invest $20 billion over five years to provide cleaner, renewable power to consumers. Most of the money will go on transmission, distribution and electronic meters, with some of the cash boosting solar generation. California legislation states 20% of power must come from renewables by 2010, even though they're more expensive than fossil fuels. Read more: Reuters, LA Times
